Weligama PS Chairman and nine other councilors surrender to police


NewsTen local councilors of the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha, including its Chairman Pushpakumara Battage, who are accused of obstructing police as part of an unlawful assembly during the opening of the Weligama Polathumodera Bridge, surrendered to the Weligama Police yesterday (16) through a lawyer. A female PS Member is among those who surrendered to police. Mr Battage, who is from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and others are accused of trying to open the Polathumodera Bridge on May 11 just before it was to be officially declared open by Minister of Youth Affairs and Southern Development, Sagala Rathnayaka, which led to a confrontation with police. Two PS Members who allegedly obstructed police were arrested at the scene and were remanded till today (17). The 10 others who surrendered yesterday are due to be produced before court today.
