Weather forces the closure of SH1 to KaikōuraALDEN WILLIAMS/STUFF State Highway 1 is closed due to bad weather overnight. Surface flooding and minor rockfall has forced the closure of State Highway 1 north and south of Kaikōura until further notice. Geotech engineers were inspecting the road and slip conditions to determine when the road would be safe to reopen. Severe weather warnings were in place across northern and central New Zealand as well as the top of the south, including Marlborough and the Kaikōura coast. The inland route to Kaikōura via Route 70 was open this morning.
