Pavilions—also known as summerhouses, gazebos or belvederes—are architects’ more free-spirited counterpoints to a house. “Pavilions are more about pure structure rather than having to focus on the technical details of a house,” says Steve Hoedemaker of Seattle-based Hoedemaker Pfeiffer. For homeowners, these open-air structures are focal points in the landscape, a place to entertain, enjoy outdoor dining or just to take in warm nights.
