From the extraordinary moment that exit poll flashed up on screen at 10pm on June 8 Theresa May has seemed doomed. She’d be gone by the morning, or by the weekend, or by the first cabinet, or by the first PMQs. She wouldn’t make it to the summer recess, she wouldn’t make it to conference or to Christmas. And yet here we are, a week to go until her goose would be cooked, and she seems as secure as she’s ever been. A Brexit divorce deal — flawed, fudged, compromised but a deal all the same — has been secured, against the expectations of many.
