We teach in high school, primary school teachers tell TSC

More than 8,000 school principals decided yesterday to press for grades 7, 8 and 9 to be domiciled in primary schools, saying they had the capacity to oversee the initial cycle of secondary school. After a three-day conference, the Kenya Elementary School Principals Association (Kepsha) also decided to support the proposal to convert all secondary boarding schools into day schools. The principals’ proposal to push grades 7, 8 and 9 to be domiciled in primary schools comes a day after the Commission on Teacher Services Commission (TSC) appeared to put a warning to primary teachers, who may be promoted to teach in high schools. On Wednesday, TSC said only teachers who get an average grade of C + on the Kenya Certificate for Secondary Examination (KCSE) would be promoted to teach in secondary schools, even if they were graduates. “Kepsha also proposes that the Commission on Teacher Services (TSC) consider compensation for difficulties for teachers when they are relocated,” he said in part of the 28-point resolution.
