Assemblywoman Nora Campos (D-San Jose) argued that employers use the salary histories as justification to continue underpaying women . Continuing efforts to close the pay gap between men and women, the California Assembly on Thursday approved a bill that would prohibit employers from seeking salary histories from job applicants. “The fact we are still having to argue that women workers should be paid fairly and equitably for their work is outrageous,” Campos said. “I’m glad my Assembly colleagues agree we need to continue fighting for equality.”The assemblywoman cited U.S. Census data indicating that women average 79 cents in pay for every dollar earned by their male counterparts. They say more time is needed to see how a bill approved last year, SB 358, works.
