Garden produce harbours members of phylum Arthropoda, largest of the animal phyla and the most endangered and least understood. We revere butterflies for their beauty and fête bees for their honey, but many insects are feared and loathed. We need insects. Oh, the irony: pesticides on food crops kill beneficial insects needed to pollinate those very crops. Our survival is inextricably linked to healthy insect populations and we are failing.
