The health service has performed well during the pandemic and stood firm when many feared it would collapse under the pressure. Now more than ever, however, an opportunity exists to introduce reforms and resources which have been lacking throughout the health service in recent decades. Social care is sometimes regarded as secondary to the wider health service, but recent evidence shows how essential it is to have a properly functioning and resourced community-based social service. The Government has said it remains committed to the Sláintecare programme, despite the resignations. All effort must be made to get the Sláintecare plan back on track.
