“I just don’t use Facebook.” Like clockwork, that is the predictable and occasionally maddening response I get from readers every time I criticize social media. That suggests that what bothers people about social media is not the services themselves, but what underpins them and is carried along with the business model. But social media can collapse distance, foster community, provide a creative outlet, and also be a home for social change and activism. Social media represents a broad social and technological evolution that has engendered both deep and wide changes in society and individual behaviour. But it seems clear that what people want is an alternative, or at least for something profound about social media to change.
