Senator Mark Warner of Virginia has proposed a law that could provide health benefits and other protections to freelancers and independent workers. If passed, the law will provide funds for non-profits, unions, and other entities to provide benefits to freelancers. Companies are not obligated to pay freelancers benefits – and 92% of freelancers say their clients do not typically provide access to any benefits, according to the LinkedIn survey. For example, a company might hire freelancers to work on graphic design because they don’t want to cover health benefits or unemployment benefits.
