VANCOUVER—Acclaimed author Wayson Choy has died at 80, saddening generations of Asian Canadian writers who say he paved a path for them. Choy’s writing career spanned more than two decades and included bestselling novels such as The Jade Peony, which explored themes of identity, race and migration in Vancouver’s historic Chinatown. Wayson Choy gained widespread critical acclaim after publishing his first novel, The Jade Peony, in 1995. “Without Wayson, there would be no Kim’s Convenience, no Carrianne Leung, no Jen Sookfong Lee.”Choy, born in Vancouver in 1939, gained critical acclaim after publishing The Jade Peony in 1995. “Reading The Jade Peony made me believe that perhaps I could write, that perhaps there was room for me, too,” she said.
