With fellow strugglers Rotherham leading at Cardiff, the outlook was grim for a Derby side that had won just one of its last 14 matches. Rooney’s half-time team talk, however, yielded immediate dividends with strikes from Martyn Waghorn and Patrick Roberts turning the game on its head within seven minutes of the re-start. Asked what he told his players at half-time with relegation looking inevitable, rookie manager Rooney told Sky Sports: ‘It was a roller-coaster 90 minutes. ‘Thankfully the season is done and we’ve done what set out to do.
