Water transport workers call off strike after assurance of hike in wages


The decision to withdraw the strike was taken at a meeting of the workers and the owners mediated by the government at the labour office, Srama Bhaban, in Dhaka on Saturday to overcome the stalemate. Department of Labour Director SM Ashrafuzzaman confirmed to bdnews24.com that the workers had agreed to call off the strike following the owners' assurance. The workers called the strike for Tk 10,000 minimum monthly wage, re-fixing compensation in case of death on duty, steps to prevent theft, terrorism and extortion and preservation of the rivers' navigability. Water Transport Workers' Movement Council Convener Ohejul Islam Bulbul said after the meeting that the owners agreed to fix the monthly salary of category 'Ka' workers at Tk 9,650 and 'Kha' Tk 7,750. State Minister for Labour Mujibul Haque Chunnu, Labour Secretary Mikail Shipar, Launch Owners' Association Adviser Golam Kibria Tipu, among others, were present.
