Water privatisation: Coalition cautions FG, Lagos govt on World Bank directors’ visit

Environment rights groups, civil society organisations, and labour unions, under the Our Water Our Right Coalition has expressed misgivings on the recent visit of World Bank Executive Directors to Nigeria, saying the visit is just a whitewash to consolidate plans for wholesale privatisation of Nigeria. In a statement issued in Lagos, the coalition raised red flags on the bank officials’ visit. Water privatisation models promoted by the World Bank through its private arm – IFC failed in Beunos Aires, Cochabamba, Paris, Manila, Delhi, Tanzania, Cameroun, Ghana, and more recently in Gabon. We want the World Bank to stop selling failed projects to our country. Mr Achike Chude of the Joint Action Front, a member of the coalition, said there was the need for the World Bank to go beyond the government and talk to the people directly.
