Two men driving home from the pub had a narrow escape when they were left trapped in their flood-stricken car, water rising around them as they awaited rescue. Moodie said he drove his Toyota Hilux down River Rd and went across the bridge. Firefighters checked on the men by calling to them every five minutes, telling them a helicopter was on its way. Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown on Monday said the two men, who were both taken to hospital for mild hypothermia, were “very lucky”. “I certainly wouldn't do that again, no.”Moodie was back at home on Monday, while Kane had returned to his farming.
