British researchers have discovered a link between low vitamin D levels and high infection and death rates after comparing average levels of vitamin D in Europe. It is suggested that people with low levels of vitamin D may be at greater risk. They found that Italy and Spain, which have two of the highest death tolls in the world, have lower than average vitamin D levels. He added: “There is some evidence that vitamin D supplements reduce the risk of respiratory virus infections and there is good evidence that vitamin D deficiency impairs the immune system.
