Riaz, who allegedly was a member of the vigilante pro-Pakistan militia Al-Badr, is accused of crimes against humanity between August and November in 1971 in the district’s Fulbaria Upazila. On Wednesday, the International Crimes Tribunal concluded the trial and kept its verdict pending after hearing closing statements by the prosecution and the defence. The prosecution has brought five charges against Riaz, which include murder, mass killing, abduction, torture and rape. The investigating agency first submitted the report on the charges against Riaz, Amjad Ali and Waz Uddin to the prosecution in February 2016. Charges against Amjad were dropped before the indictment as he died in custody after arrest.
