Sorry, Wayland, your town is quaint and historic and all, but at 13,493 residents, the 2020 U.S. Census says you are too big to host a new traveling exhibit produced by the Smithsonian Institution. Six small Massachusetts communities with populations of 12,000 or less will be chosen to host the Smithsonian's Museum on Main Street exhibit, “Crossroads: Changes in Rural America.”Applications open Monday for small-town museums, libraries and other cultural organizations interested in welcoming the exhibit. Mass Humanities, based in Northampton, will announce the selections in October. Host sites will be responsible for developing public programs to support the exhibit, including at least one community conversation held in partnership with another local organization. The state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, Mass Humanities receives major support from Mass Cultural Council.
