When American science writer Melinda Wenner Moyer looked around at what was happening in her country in 2018, she was dismayed. On the topic of race, Wenner Moyer said it’s misguided for parents to try to raise “colour blind” kids by pretending that everyone’s the same and not addressing race at all. “They start to think, well, maybe, maybe these hierarchies exist because white kids or white people are just smarter or better,” said Wenner Moyer. “Gender is one of the only characteristics that we will almost always specify when we’re talking about someone,” said Wenner Moyer. “When boys are asked, no matter how old they are, they always say a boy is the really, really smart protagonist.
