'Wandering Earth' Nabs Out Of This World $298M Debut In China (Box Office)

The Wandering Earth earned a stunning $298 million in its first six days during the lucrative Chinese New Year frame, with $28m of that coming from IMAX alone. Directed by Frant Gwo, based on Liu Cixin’s short story and starring Wu Jing (who headlined the Wolf Warrior movies), The Wandering Earth is notable as it's China's first big-budget ($50m, with 7,000 people working to make it), outer-space sci-fi spectacle. The story concerns the world uniting together when the sun expands into a red giant phase and threatens to scorch the Earth. With $298 million in China in six days, it is set to pass Detective Chinatown's record $338m seven-day total. Anyway, we'll see if The Wandering Earth ends up closer to The Mermaid ($550m in 2016) or Wolf Warrior 2 ($850m in 2017).
