Even as a captain of industry, Walter Kissinger was not above poking fun at his famous statesman brother, Henry. Once at a White House reception, according to Walter’s son William, Walter told President Richard M. Nixon in a mock grave tone that Nixon had done something unforgivable by appointing Henry secretary of state. Then Walter deadpanned that this meant he would forever be known as Henry’s brother. (Nixon, William Kissinger said, sighed with relief.) When Walter left the Allen Group in 1988, he devoted himself to philanthropy and to helping revitalize the local economy.
