By the close, the Dow Jones industrial average had gained 746.94 points, or 3.3 per cent, to 23,433.16 — its best performance on a jobs report day since 2002 DREW ANGERER/GETTY IMAGESWall Street surged yesterday as a bumper jobs report and soothing comments from the chairman of the US Federal Reserve put a shine on a turbulent week of trading. Non-farm payrolls rose by 312,000 jobs in December, smashing forecasts and highlighting strength in the US economy despite Wall Street’s losses last month. The rise was the largest in ten months and above the 177,000 increase forecast by economists. The non-farms figure was published in the Labor Department’s monthly employment situation report, regarded as the most important gauge of the health of the American economy, the world’s largest.
