Drivers struck and killed 49,340 people walking on streets between 2008 and 2017. “Dangerous by Design 2019” noted that while overall fatal traffic crashes decreased in 2017 slightly, 2016 and 2017, the last two years for which there are data, were the most deadly years for walkers killed by drivers since 1990. The report detailed how many places still lack the most basic safe infrastructure for walking. The report also found that certain groups suffered higher fatality rates: people of color, older adults, and people walking in low-income neighborhoods. From 2008 to 2017, for example, African American people were 72% more likely to have been hit and killed by a driver than people of other races.
