Hospital leaders say the new initiative will cut the number of people waiting for joint replacement surgeries in Toronto by 25 per cent by April 2024. Dr. Carmine Simone, vice-president of medical affairs at Michael Garron Hospital, said TRAC decided to go a different route by using existing hospital infrastructure and scaling up staffing numbers for weekend surgeries. Currently, TRAC includes orthopedic surgeons from Sunnybrook and Michael Garron, with the hope that other Toronto-area hospitals will join in the coming months. During its first six months, the collaborative aims to complete 16 surgeries each weekend. Dr. Paul Wong, chief of orthopedics at Michael Garron Hospital, completed seven joint surgeries during the first weekend.
