Waitaki women asked to show support

Photo: Ingrid ColeThe Waitaki District Council has asked women in the district to wear head scarves tomorrow as a gesture of support for the Waitaki Muslim community. Taking part will be (from left) Forrester Gallery, North Otago Museum and Waitaki District Archives director Jane Macknight, council digital multimedia specialist Sonia Martinez, Forrester Gallery education curator Elizabeth King, council communications specialist Lisa Scott, Safer Waitaki co-ordinator Helen Algar, and council parks officer Jane Matchett. Miss Scott said the council had this week taken part in a meeting with a member of the North Otago Muslim community who had raised the idea. A similar event in Christchurch has the blessing of the Islamic Women's Council of New Zealand and the New Zealand Muslim Association.
