British commuters were met by the eerie sight of World War I soldiers in uniform as they made their way to work Friday, the 100th anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Somme. Organisers said it was "partly inspired by tales of sightings during and after the First World War by people who believed they had seen a dead loved one.'' The project - titled We're Here Because We're Here - was part of a government-funded culture program to commemorate World War I, but was kept secret in advance in order to take people by surprise.
