Nonetheless, Nakamura's victory was the smartest booking decision WWE could have made and certainly a far better one than seeing a superstar who's already been world champion multiple times win it again. Fans made it clear last year that Nakamura, even though he hasn't even been on the main roster for a year, is about as beloved as they come. Perhaps that should not have surprised anyone given that Nakamura instantly became a top merchandise seller upon his WWE debut nearly two years ago and appears to have caught on with most fans, particularly male viewers. Nakamura, despite being given limited opportunities to move up the card, stayed over with the crowd, and WWE must have taken notice.
