A court in Russia on Thursday convicted U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner of drug possession and sentenced her to nine years in prison and fined her one million rubles, the equivalent of about $16,700. The U.S. State Department had earlier declared Griner to be “wrongfully detained” — a charge that Russia has sharply rejected.
