The World Health Organization (WHO) in Libya has delivered genomic sequencing equipment with next-generation sequencing technology to the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in Tripoli. WHO said that the device was officially handed over by the Head of Mission and WHO Representative in Libya, Elizabeth Hoff, to the Head of the NCDC, Hayder Al-Sayeh. “Genome sequencing equipment is essential, because viruses like SARS-CoV-2 change over time. Genome sequencing allows countries to track the evolution of viruses such as the SARS-COV-2 virus and identify different variants and strains. The new equipment procured by WHO will allow Libya to conduct its own genomic sequencing rather than rely on laboratories in Europe.” WHO explained.
