The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) sounded the alarm on Friday over the “growing perception” that the COVID-19 pandemic is over, despite exploding infection rates in some countries and enormous pressure growing on health services. “Even as vaccines are rolled out, people will need to keep adhering to public health measures so that everyone is protected”, said Tedros. With the first inoculations due to be given in just a few days’ time, he stressed the importance of equitable distribution. In the first phase of the rollout, sufficient doses will be provided to cover health and social care workers, said Tedros. “Equitable distribution is the right choice and the smart choice”, the WHO chief concluded.
