Why backwards? Three years ago, Leave voters were assured that the UK would depart with a deal. Norway and Switzerland were cited as examples. Vote Leave said that the UK would be part of “a free trade zone stretching all the way from Iceland to the Russian border”. Two years ago we had a general election in which, as Brexit supporters often say, more than 80 per cent voted for the Conservatives and Labour, which backed Brexit.
