The 3.5-acre Mission garden was created by Reverend John Butler. But the stars of the show are the heritage roses; there are 40 different types including climbing tea roses, chestnut roses and old bush China roses. In 2014, the New Zealand Gardens Trust designated the Mission Station garden a five-star garden of national significance, a status it has retained every year since.
