Volunteer allegedly stole $4,000 from autism group at Ottawa event, then disappeared on bathroom break

Ottawa police are asking for the public’s help to identify a woman who allegedly stole $4,000 in donations from the Autism Speaks Canada walk on Sunday. Autism Speaks Canada spokesperson Carrie Habert said the group made a last-minute call for volunteers to ensure there would be enough staff available to handle Sunday’s fundraising event at the Bell Sensplex. The suspect applied as a volunteer and claimed to have experience in charity fundraising, suggesting she would be best suited to helping the charity with its registration process. At some point the suspect complained she had an upset stomach and took a bathroom break. Habert said Autism Speaks Canada has not been able to confirm the identity that the woman provided when signing up to volunteer at the event.
