Volleyball, a sport in Southland shaking the minority tag


Volleyball Southland regional development manager Alissa Light, with son Parker Marino-Light, 1, at the new Otepuni Hub in Invercargill which includes beach volleyball courts. In 2012, she was asked by then Volleyball Southland board member Duncan McKenzie if she would be interested in taking up a 10-hour a week change-management role. Eight years on she is now the chair of the Volleyball Southland board, while Alissa Light holds the reins day to day as its regional development manager. When Volleyball Southland spotted that the Southland Bowling Club was closing up those bowling greens in the centre of Invercargill were viewed as an ideal beach volleyball location. The event will attract about 2000 players and supporters to the city for competitions in both beach volleyball and indoor volleyball.
