The virus is not his fault. Johnson says he “bitterly regrets” cancelling Christmas, which he only did “with a heavy heart”. Only a week ago he was castigating Labour leader for wanting to cancel Christmas simply by asking for some reflection on the extent to which the PM was insisting relaxations should go ahead. The advice is unclear and many exasperated families will choose to ignore it anyway because they simply cannot trust Johnson. Police will even effectively give rule breakers a green light by making it clear enforcement will, understandably, be light handed.
