Our poll finding nine in 10 are worried about jobs and the economy when the lockdown screw is turned this week is a call for help. The North of England, Midlands and other areas where ordinary life is severely curtailed are right to demand greater financial support in return. So unless the PM and his Chancellor compensate adequately the workers whose jobs and companies they legislate out of business, opposition will understandably grow while compliance with rules will fall. People want to do what is right and are willing to make sacrifices. But Johnson will deserve to pay dearly if he commits another grave blunder by destroying livelihoods after costing the country tens of thousands of lives.
