Virus kills off nearly 1m Australian jobs, youth most affected

Almost 1 million Australians have lost their jobs since social-distancing measures to limit the spread of the coronavirus ramped up, new official Australian Burea of Statistics data suggests. Analysing payroll data from the tax office, bureau found the number of jobs slumped by 7.5 percent between March 14 and April 18, ABC News reports. The data only measures those workers on the payroll of their employer, of which there are about 10 million in Australia. Retirement age workers have been badly affected, with 13.9 percent of over-70s losing their jobs. Women have also been affected more in terms of job losses, with an 8.1 percent fall compared to a 6.2 percent slide for men.
