View: How financial journalists bond with the Budget

The very moment the finance minister rises to present the budget, financial journalists across the country summon the kind of solemnity that the ancient Greeks must have reserved for the Oracle of Delphi. Budget is possibly, oddly, the only document where financial journalists encounter poetry. And minds that can make sense of "monetary policy will be expansionary in major economies" get stumped by a line like "Iss mod par na ghabra kar tham jaaiye aap" in the middle of a budget speech . "Watching MPs on Lok Sabha's biggest day..." is meant to be written/ read with an amount of wonder that you expend on restored black-and-white films. But the kerfuffle in newsrooms doesn't begin on budget day. If not for the sake of the finance ministry officials in lockdown, then at least for the sanity of the financial journalists who can spare themselves the self-inflicted drama of a lifetime.
