TOKYO—Is the videogame console dead? Next month, Google Inc. will release its much talked about cloud-based gaming platform, Google Stadia, joining a handful of other providers already giving consumers the option to play electronic games online without downloading gigabytes of data to local hardware. Meanwhile, new versions of the leading game consoles—Sony Corp.’s PlayStation and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox—aren’t set to reach store shelves for another year.
