A little over a decade ago, in 2003, a school teacher in Texas was arrested on an obscenity charge for selling vibrators to other women. Her name was Joanne Webb, then 43 and a mother of three, and she had never been arrested before. Like a growing number of women at the time, Webb had become a Passion Parties representative, hosting masturbation seminars for other women modeled on the Tupperware parties of the 1950s. Power & Passion screened only once during the Omori retrospective, but it can still be purchased on DVD or streamed via its website, technologyoforgasm.com. And as smart technologies enter the sex-toy market, the documentary itself will become even more cemented in time, with 2007 looking like just another stop in the fraught and fascinating history of female sexual pleasure.
