The bridge has been partially operational since September 10 when horizontal cracks were noticed on a girder. The south bound two lane new bridge will continue to be used for up and down light vehicular movement. All heavy vehicles will be diverted to Thane-Bhiwandi via Ghodbunder Road.North and south bound vehicles have been running at a restricted speed of 20 kmph on the bridges in a gap of 10 minutes. The rehabilitation of the bridge began in February after it was decided to undertake external pre-stressing (introduction of a compressive force to the concrete to counteract the stresses that will result from an applied load). The bridge remained partially open during the repairs. The Denmark based consultancy company Ramboll that has done the rehabilitation had earlier recommended truss (diagonal, triangular bars) to support the bridge. The NHAI better open the bridge before things go out of hand," said a motorist Ajay Rane, who drives from Vasai to Andheri every day.
