Venture capital is seen as private equity’s more glamorous cousin and that’s no surprise: investors get first look at exciting new technologies, and the profits from the biggest successes are mind blowing. Venture capital returns are more volatile than private equity, but the top firms, such as Sequoia Capital or Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund seem to persistently make the best returns, which appears less and less the case with private equity, according to recent studies by McKinsey and others.
