Venezuelan art director lands his first Canadian job midway through studies at George Brown


As a graphic designer who served as the art director in major advertising agencies in Venezuela, Sergio Jaua always worked closely with marketing departments. He didn’t have a formal education in marketing, but with all his experience considered himself a strategic and marketing-focused designer. After immigrating to Canada in 2011, however, he discovered that his foreign creative experience wasn’t as easily valued in such a different market. It requires students to complete six courses that include topics such as advertising and communications, marketing strategy and digital marketing — the latter of which Jaua says he found especially beneficial. “In some areas like digital marketing, which I consider the fastest evolving field in marketing lately, I wasn’t updated,” he says.
