Vendors banned from Ilaya Street in Manila

MANILA, Philippines — Street vendors have been banished indefinitely from Ilaya Street in Divisoria, Manila, after Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso found piles of trash scattered everywhere during a surprise inspection around 5:30 a.m. on Monday. Under no circumstances should they occupy major roads or Mabuhay Lanes like Juan Luna Street and Recto Avenue, he stressed. “If people [and vehicles] cannot pass because [vendors] are occupying the whole street, I will make their Christmas sad. During Monday’s flag ceremony, he told City Hall employees that there had been reported attempts to extort money from street vendors for the holiday season. We’re going back to Recto,’” Domagoso said.
