Not all edible crops like a winter start, it’s fair to say, but there are a few things you can grow this month. Garlic can be prone to a few soil-borne diseases too, so don’t grow it in the same spot as last year. Elephant garlic, shallots and Jerusalem artichokes can also be planted now, and broad beans and peas can be sown. You can plant brassica seedlings too, as well as seedlings of lettuces (in pots in really cold places), spinach and silverbeet. Traditionally, garlic is planted on the shortest day in winter, but you can sow the cloves any time between May and the end of July.
