CRYPTIC CROSSWORD — Today we have a puzzle from a prolific “setter,” or constructor, making his New York Times debut, although he’s quite a capo di cryptic in England. However, this puzzle is not set by Mr. Halpern alone! I love the idea of a hive mind coming up with a product as eccentric as a cryptic puzzle — if you happen to be a participant in this puzzle’s coming-to-be, please relay any anecdotes in the comments. For everyone else, this is an approachable puzzle replete with nearly every variety of clue and chock-full of zingers. Solving one of these can be very personal but I found the left side a bit quicker than the right.
