Vancouver is smart and hopes $50 million grant will make it smarter

Vancouver over the past five years has become “smarter” through digitalization and continues to develop digital solutions to offer services, according to the city’s chief technology officer. One sample of how city staff use data collection to improve services is the dashboard showing daily requests for services that city manager Sadhu Johnston regularly consults, Jessie Adcock told a Greater Vancouver Board of Trade meeting on smart cities on Friday. And the city wants to improve digitalization to deal with businesses so that “we’re not a government technology organization, but an enterprise technology organization,” she said. The federal government in its budget announced a smart cities competition to encourage communities to improve through innovation, data and connected technology, and last week announced the top prize would be $50 million. The City of Vancouver is inviting citizens’ ideas to help the city win the prize on its website.
