But late on Saturday night it emerged that there had been a recommendation to give van Gisbergen a penalty for breaching refuelling regulations, with his Holden lowered to the ground, while still taking on fuel. McLaughlin has now been given the race win, while van Gisbergen has been demoted to fifth. So if van Gisbergen wins, McLaughlin has to finish in the top six to claim the title. Triple Eight accepted that the team had broke the rules, but argued for a penalty to be given to the team, rather than van Gisbergen, but this was turned down.
