A nearly 4-year federal prison sentence has been handed down against a McAllen attorney whose help allowed a drug trafficking organization to move its illegal cargo through the Rio Grande Valley. Criminal defense attorney Eric Jarvis was hit with a 45-month prison term Tuesday afternoon, nine months after he admitted he had illegally obtained federal documents to assist a Mexican drug trafficker. Federal agents had raided Jarvis’ McAllen law office about a year ago, and federal prosecutors say investigators found that Jarvis had been accessing the federal court’s PACER database for about four years to obtain documents the trafficker could use to facilitate drug smuggling and distribution activities. Jarvis also admitted he was paid for his help with proceeds from illegal drug sales. The 49-year-old Jarvis has been given 30 days to surrender and report to federal prison.
