SÃO PAULO—Brazilian mining giant Vale SA reported a loss in the first quarter as the world’s biggest iron-ore producer issued its first earnings report that includes the effects of the deadly accident in January at its dam in the town of Brumadinho. Vale lost $1.68 billion in the quarter, compared with a profit of $1.61 billion in the same period a year earlier, the company said Thursday. The loss attributable to Vale shareholders was $1.64 billion, from a profit of $1.59 billion a year earlier.
